- What is TechCorps/TechPartners?
TechCorps/TechPartners is a group of local volunteers interested
in learning about and sharing their technology knowledge. We help
people and organizations learn how to use and maintain technology
without the crutch of “technologists.” In other words,
we want to help you become technologically self-sufficient.
We share our knowledge with those who need it the most:
- students
- nonprofit organizations
- interested individuals
- small businesses
Our mission is to make technology universally available while enhancing
productivity at the lowest possible cost.
- What do TechCorps/TechPartners do?
TechCorps/TechPartners consultants examine clients' computers
and networks; look for fundamental issues; make recommendations
for short- and long-term solutions; and assist with repairs as needed.
They can also help install software, troubleshoot problems, and
offer general tutoring.
- How much does it cost to have my organization's
technology assessed by KCBXnet's TechCorps/TechPartners?
The TechCorps/TechPartners' services are fee based for those
who can afford it, and subsidized for those who can't. Call
545-5002 or email
to find out what it might cost
your organization to use our services.
- Where is TechCorps/TechPartners located?
TechCorps/TechPartners is located at KCBXnet on 4100 Vachell Lane
in San Luis Obispo. Volunteers have hands-on access to servers running
Microsoft and Linux software in our training lab, where they can
learn and practice the latest technologies. In addition, KCBXnet's
Training Center seats 20-30 people for classroom-style learning.
Volunteers with TechCorps/TechPartners also go out in the field
to help nonprofit organizations and small businesses find technological
solutions to organizational problems.
- If I'm a member of the TechCorps/TechPartners, how many hours will I need to commit?
TechCorps/TechPartners members are volunteers. All we ask is that
you commit to at least 2 hours/week for training and assisting other
volunteers. The more you're in the field working, the greater
exposure you'll have to both tech problems and organizations
who might need your help in the future.
- What if I'm on site and can't figure out how to make something work?
The great thing about the TechCorps/TechPartners is that you'll
have other TechCorps/TechPartners members who can help you out in
a pinch via telephone, email, or on-site.
- Can I get paid?
Although most TechCorps/TechPartners members volunteer their time,
there may be some projects for which you might be paid an hourly
rate.
- I've been an IT Support person before and been
abused by end-users hoping for the “quick fix.” How
can I control clients' expectations so I don't burn
out?
Our nonprofit clientele sign a statement of work waiver that specifies
the number of hours we'll commit and the types of projects
we'll undertake. When work exceeds those guidelines, a separate
agreement will be negotiated. Nonprofits are aware of volunteers'
limitations and are grateful for help.
In the case of small business clients, a similar statement of work
will be signed by both parties to clarify the work project, set
expectations, and establish procedures for doing work outside of
scope.
- One of the reasons I'd like to become involved
in the TechCorps/TechPartners is to learn more about technology
while I work. What opportunities will I have?
We set up the TechCorps/TechPartners lab and Training Center to
give volunteer technicians hands-on experience in setting up and
maintaining computer systems. As an incentive, we provide online
training in a variety of software and IT classes through our partner
MindLeaders.
- How do I become a member of TechCorps/TechPartners?
The first thing to do is fill out a TechCorps/TechPartners application
<link>. A TechCorps/TechPartners supervisor will then interview
you and ask about your technical background, your goals, and what
you hope to achieve by becoming a member. An existing TechCorps/TechPartners
member will be your mentor, orienting you to both the training and
assistance programs.
If you have questions about joining the program, contact
or call 805.545.5002.
